No Plan for Tonight | Trans-America Trail Day 3

Day 3 of the Trans-America Trail started with wet tents, wet motorcycles, and absolutely no idea where we were going to sleep that night. And somewhere along the way, one of the bikes ended up on the ground. After thunderstorms rolled through camp overnight, Greg and I packed up at The Pines Campground and continued southwest across Virginia. This was the first day of the trip where we left camp without having lodging figured out ahead of time — we knew which direction we were going, and we'd worry about where to sleep later. Day 3 also brought some of the best riding we'd seen so far. More dirt, gravel, rocks, mountain roads, and long stretches of trail where it finally started to feel like the Trans-America Trail I'd imagined before the trip. By late afternoon, we still needed somewhere to sleep. We eventually found Camp Burson at Hungry Mother State Park and decided to head that way even though we couldn't reach anyone and the office would be closed when we arrived. Thankfully, the camp hosts got us squared away with a site. After three days on the trail, we finally got our first showers, attempted some questionable campground laundry, broke out the Ramen Bae, cracked open a couple of beers, and called it a night. Day 3 wasn't perfect. But it might have been the first day where we stopped worrying so much about having everything figured out and just started living the trip. Wake up. Pack the bikes. Head west.
