You watch a tutorial. Every step makes sense. You could probably do it yourself right now. Then you close the video, try it, and can't even remember the first step.
Your memory isn't the problem. Your brain can make you feel like you've learned something before you've actually learned it — psychologists call it the fluency illusion, and almost everyone falls for it. Rereading, highlighting, watching a lesson twice, all of it can feel productive while building almost nothing that lasts.
In this video: why recognition and recall are two completely different things, why a forest path that's slightly overgrown teaches your memory more than a clear one ever could, why testing yourself beats rereading every single time, why mixing up your practice makes you feel worse but perform better later, and why the fastest learners aren't memorizing more facts — they're just better connected.
One simple exercise at the end you can try tomorrow: close everything, and ask yourself what you can actually remember. That's the whole test.
If this changed how you think about studying, try one idea tomorrow and come back and tell us what you noticed.
