David Cassidy: Man Undercover — Season 1, Episode 3: “Cage of Steel”
Released: 1978
Runtime: 49 minutes
Written by Walter Dallenbach
In “Cage of Steel,” David Cassidy stars as undercover officer Dan Shay, who is drawn into one of his most dangerous assignments yet: going behind bars to expose a criminal operation being controlled from inside prison.
The episode begins outside the prison world, with Shay already working undercover among a group involved in a criminal pickup connected to drugs and stolen goods. After a tense roadside exchange involving Jeff Marr, Peter, Ernie, Cleary, Richie, and police surveillance led by Sgt. Abrams, Shay’s undercover work leads into a larger investigation. The case points toward a prison-based criminal network and a powerful inmate named Lobo, whose influence reaches beyond the prison walls.
To get close to Lobo, Shay assumes the identity of Dan Coleman and enters prison as an inmate. Once inside, he must navigate guards, prisoners, suspicion, intimidation, and violence while trying to convince Lobo’s circle that he belongs there. Shay’s cover places him in contact with inmates including Kicker, Wiley, Kevin, Commanchero, and others, each of whom becomes part of the dangerous prison environment he must survive.
Inside the prison, Shay is tested repeatedly. He faces threats, fights, isolation, coded communication, and pressure from both sides of the investigation. Sgt. Abrams and the outside police team continue working the case, while Shay attempts to uncover how Lobo’s operation functions and how orders are moving between the prison and the outside world.
The episode also brings in Belinda, who becomes connected to the investigation as Shay’s contact. Her involvement raises the stakes as the case moves beyond undercover observation and into direct danger. As the operation develops, Shay must maintain his cover long enough to identify Lobo’s network, protect the people helping him, and avoid being exposed before the trap can close.
“Cage of Steel” is a prison-centered undercover episode that places Dan Shay in a confined and highly dangerous setting, where one wrong move could expose him as a cop. The story combines classic 1970s police drama, prison suspense, undercover identity work, and David Cassidy’s dramatic role as Officer Dan Shay.
