Rope, Rifle, Compass — Three Days to Be the Best

A shotgun. Then a rifle. Then a pistol. Between each one, a sprint, in full kit, with the clock running. This is not a range day. This is an elimination. At the start of September 2026, U.S. Southern Command ran its Service Member of the Year competition at Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island, South Carolina. Three days. Service members from across the Joint Force — different branches, different jobs, different uniforms — measured against each other on the same ground. The criteria are published in plain language: leadership, warfighting skills, physical fitness, military bearing, professional knowledge, and overall readiness. Six things. Notice how many of them cannot be measured by a stopwatch. This is what those three days look like — the rifle and pistol relays late in the schedule when nobody is fresh, the rope that nobody talks their way up, the night land navigation that eliminates more competitors than any other event, and the board at the end that no camera makes interesting. No results have been published for this competition. No names, no scores. Which is oddly appropriate: for everyone who was there, the interesting part was never the announcement.
