HBO's Lanterns is supposed to be a bold new direction for the Green Lantern franchise, but after watching the first three episodes, I'm convinced it's one of the worst-written superhero shows in recent memory.
In this Lanterns review, I'm breaking down Episodes 1, 2 and 3 of James Gunn's DCU series to examine everything wrong with its storytelling, characters and increasingly ridiculous plot.
From Hal Jordan's reckless behaviour and John Stewart's inconsistent characterization to the bizarre rules surrounding the Green Lantern rings, this show seems determined to undermine its own worldbuilding at every opportunity. And that's before we get into the controversies.
Episode 3 takes us deep into John Stewart's disturbing childhood, his relationship with Bernadette Stewart and the questionable decisions made by the show's writers. We'll also examine the political messaging surrounding racism and sexism, comments from writer Vanessa Baden Kelly, and the show's treatment of Hal Jordan.
Is Lanterns genuinely a clever reimagining of DC's Green Lantern mythology, or is it another case of terrible writing being mistaken for thoughtful television?
Over the course of this extended Lanterns video essay, we'll examine the plot holes, character inconsistencies and narrative contrivances that make HBO's latest DC series such a frustrating experience.
So grab a drink, get comfortable and join me as we tear apart the first three episodes of Lanterns.
