McCabe Thiele Example 4 - Complete solution with material balance. Problem Statement: A rectification column is fed with 100 kmol/h of mixture containing 50 mol% hexane and 50 mol% octane at 101.325 kPa. Feed is at its boiling point. Distillate to contain 90 mol% hexane and bottoms 10 mol% hexane. Reflux ratio is 3.1. Calculate D and W (kmol/h) and number of theoretical trays. In this video: 00:00 - Problem statement - Hexane Octane system 01:00 - Part 1: Material Balance to find Distillate (D) and Bottoms (W) flow rates 01:30 - Overall balance F = D + W, Component balance F*xF = D*xD + W*xW 03:10 - Calculation: D = 50 kmol/h, W = 50 kmol/h 04:00 - Part 2: McCabe Thiele method to find theoretical trays 04:30 - Plotting equilibrium data (given) and diagonal 05:45 - Drawing q-line for saturated liquid feed (q=1, vertical line) 06:30 - Drawing rectifying operating line with R=3.1 08:00 - Stepping off stages from (0.9, 0.9) to (0.1, 0.1) This example is important because it has 2 parts - first find D & W, then find trays. #McCabeThieleMethod #DistillationColumn #HexaneOctane #MaterialBalance #TheoreticalTrays #MassTransfer #ChemicalEngineering
