Dreamcast was SEGA’s last home console. But the ideas behind it—and the worlds its players shared—continued beyond the machine. This short documentary follows Isao Okawa’s belief in connected entertainment, Yuji Naka and Sonic Team’s work on Phantasy Star Online, and the financial pressures that brought SEGA’s console business to an end. From the ambition of a built-in modem to an online adventure shared by players in different places, this is the story of a commercial failure and a creative achievement that belonged to the same moment. Brand History X explores the people, decisions and turning points behind familiar brands. Subscribe for more short documentaries about brand history.
