Don’t throw away scrap metal until you see what it can become! In this DIY tool-making compilation, I transform an old chrome vanadium screwdriver, a simple steel bolt, a scrap bolt, and a brass rod into three amazing handmade tools for hand engraving, metal turning, woodturning, and precision woodworking.
These projects show how ordinary scrap metal can be turned into professional workshop tools using creative ideas, basic machinery, careful machining, and traditional craftsmanship. If you enjoy DIY tools, metalworking, woodworking, woodturning, hand engraving, machining, and restoring old materials, this video is packed with useful techniques, workshop tips, and satisfying transformations.
The first project is a handmade engraving graver made from an old chrome vanadium screwdriver. Instead of throwing the damaged screwdriver away, I reuse its strong chrome vanadium steel to create a sharp and practical hand engraving tool. The steel is cut, shaped, ground, hardened, sharpened, and polished to produce a precise cutting edge suitable for engraving metal.
I also make a comfortable wooden graver handle with a brass ferrule, giving the finished engraving tool a traditional and professional appearance. This homemade hand push graver can be used for metal engraving, jewelry making, decorative carving, fine line engraving, and other detailed metalworking projects. The combination of hardened chrome vanadium steel, polished brass, and carefully shaped wood turns a discarded screwdriver into a beautiful and useful engraving tool.
The second project begins with a simple steel bolt. I transform this ordinary bolt into a strong cutting tool holder for both metal turning and woodturning. This homemade lathe tool holder securely holds a cutting insert or sharpened tool bit and allows it to be used for shaping wood, brass, aluminum, and other workable materials.
This DIY turning tool is a great example of how a common bolt can become a useful workshop tool with accurate drilling, cutting, grinding, threading, and machining. I carefully shape the bolt, create the tool-holding section, install the cutting tip, and finish the surface to produce a durable handmade turning tool.
The completed tool holder can be used as a metal lathe cutting tool, woodturning tool, carbide insert holder, or experimental cutting tool for homemade lathe projects. It is a simple but effective design for makers who enjoy creating their own tools from inexpensive materials.
In the third project, I combine a scrap steel bolt with a brass rod to make an amazing wheel marking gauge. A wheel marking gauge is an essential precision woodworking tool used to mark clean and accurate lines parallel to the edge of a wooden workpiece.
The steel bolt is reshaped and machined to create the main shaft, while the brass rod is turned and fitted to make the body and adjustment components. I also make a sharp marking wheel that cuts wood fibers cleanly instead of tearing them like a traditional marking pin. The adjustable mechanism allows the marking depth to be set precisely and locked securely.
This handmade wheel marking gauge is useful for joinery, cabinetmaking, furniture making, dovetail work, mortise and tenon joints, and many other woodworking projects. The combination of polished brass and dark steel gives the tool a classic appearance while keeping it practical, accurate, and durable.
Throughout this compilation, I use a variety of metalworking and woodworking techniques, including cutting, drilling, filing, turning , sanding, polishing, threading, sharpening, woodturning, metal turning, heat treatment, tool making, and precision fitting. These three scrap metal projects demonstrate that useful and attractive workshop tools can be made without expensive materials.
If you enjoy making homemade tools, restoring old workshop equipment, recycling scrap metal, or learning creative metalworking ideas, this video will give you plenty of inspiration. Each project is designed to show the complete transformation from unwanted material into a functional tool that can be used in a real workshop.
