We were told, "Don't have children." Nearly 26 years later, here's our story.
Pastors Bill and Lynne Themelaras get raw and unscripted about interracial marriage, racism, and reconciliation.

In an unscripted conversation, Bill and Lynne, a white man and a Black woman married for nearly 26 years, talk about how interracial marriage has grown since they married and how they're still sometimes not seen as a couple at stores and restaurants. They share the well-intended but painful advice they received from adults they looked up to ("don't have children"), and how they intentionally raised their kids to be proud of both races without choosing a side. They recount hard moments in their first home in Pittsburgh: a young neighbor child yelling a racial slur at Lynne, and later Bill's car being keyed with an anarchy symbol and a flaming cross. They talk about learning each other's families and communication styles, and offer advice for young couples: have candid conversations early, recognize cultural bias and old hurts, choose reconciliation over being right, ask questions with humility, honor each other's heritage, and stay in it.
KEY TAKEAWAYS
• Have honest conversations about culture, family, and bias early, during the "honeymoon" stage.
• Recognize when old hurts are coloring how you react to your spouse.
• Unity isn't uniformity. True unity celebrates diversity.
• Ask yourself: would you rather be right or reconciled?
• Approach families with humility and honor, ask questions, and stay in it over time.
