I finally sat down with Hozier's debut album “Hozier” and I need to talk about it. This man was writing and singing at THIS level on his FIRST project?! If you're a Hozier fan, you already knew, but if you're late to the party like me, come witness the moment it clicked. I went into this reaction already knowing about half the songs on the album. But sitting down and experiencing the full album front to back is a completely different thing. What hit me hardest wasn't just the songs I already loved, it was realizing how consistently brilliant the entire project is, track after track, with no real weak points. Hozier is genuinely one of the most underrated songwriters and vocalists working today, and the fact that he was operating at this level on a debut album is staggering. Some people are just born with gifts so obvious that it's impossible to imagine them doing anything else. Thank God we don't live in the timeline where this man ended up as a Deloitte consultant instead of making art like this. What kept catching me off guard was the way he writes about love. Song after song, I found myself thinking "I've never heard someone describe love in that way before." He might be one of the most romantic singers I've ever heard — not romantic in a surface-level, greeting card way, but in a way that feels ancient and devotional. This album is soaked in themes of religion, desire, spirituality, and the way morality and shame get tangled up with love. Each track explores that territory in a different shade, a different temperature. I've never heard someone love so passionately and so deeply and then turn that feeling into words and music in a way where you genuinely feel like you're bearing witness to something sacred. my current ranking: 1. Take Me to Church 2. Jackie and Wilson 3. Angel of Small Death & the Codeine Scene 4. Like Real People Do 5. From Eden 6. It Will Come Back 7. Someone New 8. Work Song 9. Foreigner's God 10. Sedated 11. Cherry Wine (Live) 12. In a Week 13. To Be Alone Let me know in the comments what YOUR Hozier ranking looks like — and if you think I got it wrong, tell me which track deserves better. #Hozier #HozierAlbum #HozierReaction #TakeMeToChurch #JackieAndWilson #FromEden #LikeRealPeopleDo #WorkSong #CherryWine #AlbumReaction #FirstTimeListening #MusicReaction #IndieFolk #BluesSoul #HozierDebut #AlbumReview 00:00 Introduction 01:29 Take Me To Church 05:24 Angel of Small Death and the Codeine Scene 10:07 Jackie and Wilson 13:29 Someone New 19:04 To Be Alone 24:19 From Eden 28:45 In a Week (ft Karen Cowley) 33:57 Sedated 37:35 Work Song 41:31 Like Real People Do 44:16 It Will Come Back 48:34 Foreigner’s God 51:32 Cherry Wine - Live 56:11 Final thoughts
