A recent joint geodetic and hydrographic survey mission in Port Vila, Vanuatu has identified vertical land movement caused by last year’s 7.3 magnitude earthquake.
Understanding exactly how the land has shifted allows authorities to better assess which areas are most at risk, plan safer reconstruction of infrastructure such as roads, bridges, and water systems, and make informed decisions to protect communities from future hazards.
The survey was made possible through collaboration between the UK Hydrographic Office (UKHO), the Republic of Fiji Navy, the Royal New Zealand Navy, and the Pacific Community (SPC) through the Climate and Oceans Support Program in the Pacific (#COSPPac).
By collecting accurate geospatial data, the mission provides essential information to support disaster recovery, strengthen resilience planning, and promote sustainable development in Vanuatu. Vanuatu Lands Department surveyors are now actively contributing to national recovery dialogue—a feat that marks an important step in building local technical capacity and leadership.
