Check engine light on? Before you approve an expensive repair, there are 7 things you should check first.
A check engine light does NOT automatically mean your engine is failing — and a trouble code does not automatically tell you which part needs to be replaced.
In this video, Ryan Mercer walks through the simple checks ordinary drivers can make before spending hundreds — or even thousands — at a repair shop.
You’ll see what a steady vs. flashing check engine light really means, why a loose gas cap can trigger a warning, how to read an OBD-II trouble code, and why codes like P0420, P0171 and P0302 are clues — not automatic diagnoses.
We’ll also check:
• Gas cap and EVAP problems
• OBD-II trouble codes
• Battery terminals and voltage
• Vacuum leaks
• Intake hoses and electrical connectors
• Engine oil and coolant
• Misfires and catalytic converter problems
• What to ask a mechanic before approving an expensive repair
A good mechanic is worth paying.
But there’s a big difference between paying for a proper diagnosis and paying someone to guess with your money.
If your check engine light is flashing, especially if the engine is shaking, losing power or running badly, treat it seriously and get the vehicle somewhere safe.
The goal isn’t to turn you into a mechanic.
It’s to help you understand enough about your own car to make better decisions, avoid unnecessary parts replacement, and keep an older paid-off vehicle on the road longer.
Keep it longer. Fix what you can. Spend less.
