DESIL BAYANA
✍️ Playwright : Kumar Shailendra
🎬 Design & Direction : Kishore Keshav
After composing dozen works in Sanskrit and Avahatt languages, the great Maithili poet Mahakavi Vidyapati exclaimed in his Avahatta work Kirtilata, “Desil bayana sabjan mittha” (The language of the land is sweet to everyone). He started composing songs in Desil Bayana (local language, Maithili), the crown jewel of Maithili literature. But did this ideological linguistic change of Vidyapati become easily accepted to all? No! He was criticized, condemned and opposed too. He struggled as best he could according to the circumstances of the time and stuck to his decision. On the other hand, the Desil Bayana was his chief tool in the war with the Turkish ruler Ibrahim Shah and the subsequent disappearance of Maharaja Shiv Singh. But why do we need to discuss it today? Because, after globalization, regional languages/dialects are disappearing all over the world gradually one-by-one. As the dominance and expansion of a particular language is increasing, Maithili (rather than any other regional language/dialect of the world) is also under threat. The protection of linguistic identity (the core of human existence) is in fact a fundamental issue related to one's geography, larger community, identity, distinct culture, customs, festivals, cuisine and privacy. So, language discourse was a living subject in all periods and still is today. As Vidyapati felt the need for it in the fourteenth-fifteenth centuries; Often more than that, this discourse is needed today. On the pretext of Vidyapati's language struggle, the play is a sign of the linguistic challenge of Vishwa-gram and a conscious attempt to warn people. It serves as a serious attempt to re-examine this discourse and raise awareness. By weaving in contemporary references and themes, the music in the play is traditional, yet well-crafted and pleasing to the ear.
