We start from the ongoing United Nations General Assembly where about 77 UN delegates walked out of the General Assembly hall ahead of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s speech in New York, prompting him to describe them as “moral cowards.” Netanyahu defended Israel’s actions as his government faces international condemnation over its military operations in Gaza and Lebanon. A UN commission of inquiry has accused Israel of genocide in Gaza, a charge Israel strongly rejects. The recent conflict dates back to the Hamas-led 7 October 2023 attack on southern Israel, which killed about 1,200 people and saw 251 others taken hostage. Israel’s subsequent military campaign in Gaza has killed more than 73,920 people, according to the territory’s health ministry. The Nigerian delegation to UNGA led by Vice President Kashim Shettima, UN Secretary-General António Guterres and Kenyan President William Ruto have called for greater African representation, specifically demanding two permanent seats for Africa at the United Nations Security Council, UNSC. Tinubu urged stronger multilateralism, diplomacy and international cooperation to address conflicts, terrorism and other global threats. And back in Nigeria, the political atmosphere continues to get fired up with fresh controversies surrounding both the 2023 and 2027 general elections. Minister of FCT, Nyesom Wike, has opened up on the circumstances surrounding Peter Obi’s failure to win the 2023 presidential election in Rivers State. Speaking during an interview on TVC News recently, Wike said he and members of the defunct G-5 governors stopped Peter Obi from winning the state. He said the group allowed Obi to win some South South states to stop Atiku Abubakar from winning those states. The OK Movement, has rejected the description of the organisation as a mere support group of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), insisting that it remained an independent political organisation with its own structures and internal administration. Politics The National Director-General of the movement, Hon. John Ozyl Ughulu, made the position known in a statement, coming barely a day after the National Leader of the NDC, Senator Seriake Dickson, described the activities of the OK Movement as “unheard of” and “nonsensical.” Recall the the OK had earlier unveiled a 59-member Campaign Council which the NDC rejected outrightly, bringing the support group and NDC leadership into sharp disagreement. In what many have described as an attempt to further politicise the incarceration of former governor of Kaduna State, Nasir El-Rufai, the ADC presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar has announced the appointment of El-Rufai as the deputy chairman of the ADC Presidential Campaign Council. In the meantime, El-Rufai had earlier cried out that he has been abandoned by close friends and associates whom he trusted and had helped in time past. Following the announcement of te ADC Presidential Campaign Council, former deputy governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria and candidate of the Young Progressives Party in the 2019 general election, Dr. Kingsley Muoghalu has rejected his appointment to the ADC Campaign Council, citing that he was not consulted before the appointment was made public as the reason for the rejection, adding that he retired from partisan politics in 2022. Fresh and controversial revelations have been made by chieftain of the NDC, Buba Galadima, that former governor of Ekiti State, John Fayemi alongside seven others, including himself are working with the NDC to defeat Bola Tinubu in 2027. This revelation comes after Isaac Fayose also alleged that five APC governors are secretly working against Tinubu. As the political fireworks between FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike and the APC governors concerning his Rainbow Coalition continue to generate sensation in the media space, his outburst against the ambition of Imo governor, Hope Uzodimma to become Senate President resurfaced within the week, even as he turned on the FCT Senator Ireti Kingibe asserting that Kingibe will not return as Senator in 2207, with Kingibe firing back that the people of FCT, not Wike will determine who represents them at the Senate. A chieftain of the African Democratic Congress, ADC, in Anambra State, Ndubuisi Nwobu, has lambasted the Minister of Works, Dave Umahi, for ordering that the First Niger Bridge be decorated with the pictures of President Bola Tinubu, describing the move as sycophancy taken too far. He questioned the idea of personally celebrating the President for the rehabilitation of public infrastructure, arguing that the funds used for the project belong to the Nigerian people.
