Toronto 401 and 404 Drive
Highway 401 (also called the Macdonald-Cartier Freeway) is Ontario’s main east-west highway. It stretches across the entire province from Windsor to the Quebec border. In the Toronto area, the 401 is one of the busiest highways in North America. Some sections near Toronto have up to 18 lanes (including collector and express lanes), making it one of the widest highways in the world. Every day, hundreds of thousands of cars and trucks use it to travel through the Greater Toronto Area (GTA), passing near Toronto Pearson Airport and connecting to many other highways.Highway 404 is a north-south freeway that starts where the Don Valley Parkway (DVP) meets the 401 in Toronto. It runs northward through North York, Markham, Richmond Hill, Aurora, and Newmarket, ending near Keswick (East Gwillimbury). The 404 is about 50 km (31 miles) long and serves as a major route for commuters heading north from Toronto into York Region. It often has high-occupancy vehicle (HOV) lanes to help reduce traffic.
