Sam Giancana was one of the most powerful figures in the history of the Chicago Outfit. By 1975, he was also one of the most dangerous witnesses in America.
The former Chicago mob boss had been summoned to testify before the Senate’s Church Committee about the secret relationship between the CIA and the Mafia, including plots to assassinate Fidel Castro. Days before he could speak, Giancana was murdered inside his own Oak Park home.
In this episode of MOB CHRONICLES, we examine the final years of Sam Giancana, his relationship with the CIA, Johnny Roselli, the Castro assassination plots, his fall from power inside the Chicago Outfit, the possible role of Tony Accardo and Joey Aiuppa, the mystery surrounding Butch Blasi and Tony Spilotro, and the strange circumstances surrounding the withdrawal of federal surveillance shortly before Giancana was killed.
The murder remains officially unsolved.
But the deeper question is not simply who pulled the trigger.
Who had the most to gain from Sam Giancana never reaching Washington alive?
