"I Married a Nobody," the Duke Told the Ballroom—She Opened the Locket Around Her Neck
Emmeline Danforth cuts seals for a living, the way her father did before his eyes failed, and she has been the Duchess of Quennell for exactly six weeks. Her husband is civil at breakfast and civil in the hall and has never once said her name. His aunt runs the house, chooses her gowns, and has spent five careful weeks telling him what the Danforths really are: tradespeople who held a debt over a dying man and named a duchess's coronet as their price. Emmeline believes she can outlast it. She believes that if she is useful enough, quiet enough, and patient enough, the truth will arrive on its own.
Then, in the middle of a ball he did not want, a guest asks the Duke of Quennell who his wife's people are, and he answers in front of two hundred faces. He does not know she is standing eight feet behind him. She does not flinch, and she does not leave. She lifts one hand to her throat and opens a small gold locket her father made for her when she was twelve, and inside it, folded thin as a leaf, is a paper written and sealed by the Duke's own dead father.
What that paper says will empty the room, expose the woman who forged two letters with a seal that has been dead eleven years, and reveal exactly which way the debt has been running for nine years.
