For months Canada heard a different message in its own trade talks: don't let their cars in, you cannot trust them. On the twelfth of September the president said he would be okay with Chinese automakers building cars in the United States, as long as they hire American workers, and that he would support a plant. An analyst on CBC said that drew a huge pushback from his own party, from the Democrats and from the auto sector, and major American automakers are pushing Congress to make the restrictions on Chinese cars permanent. From China's side, the analyst said this visit was about being treated as a co equal of the United States, something China has wanted for years, and that China is now in a stronger position.
