Kiwis buy utes because they hold their value. A 2024 Toyota Hilux GR Sport on Trade Me is asking only about 3% less than it cost new. But some utes bought new in the last few years have lost tens of thousands of dollars in two or three years. We count down 8 utes: Ram 1500, Volkswagen Amarok Aventura V6, Ford Ranger Wildtrak V6, Ford Ranger Raptor, Jeep Gladiator, Nissan Navara PRO-4X, Mercedes-Benz X-Class and the LDV eT60, New Zealand's first electric ute, where the new distributor cut $23,000 off the price of a new one. How we worked it out: for each ute, the list price new (with its source) against the median asking price on Trade Me in early October 2026. "Worthless" is the headline. The real numbers are percentages and dollars, and we show you every one. The pattern is clear. The utes that lost the most weren't the ones that broke down. They were the ones where the new price was cut, the model was dropped or replaced, or the distributor changed. Plus Mazda's BT-50 leaving New Zealand, and the utes that held up. Which one surprised you the most? Tell us in the comments, and tell us what you paid. ⚠️ Asking prices are Trade Me listings in October 2026, not sale prices, and some listing counts are small. Registrations and recalls are from the NZTA. Always check current prices before you buy or sell. 0:00 Utes are supposed to hold their value 1:45 How we worked it out 2:13 #8 Ram 1500 4:01 #7 Volkswagen Amarok Aventura V6 5:29 #6 Ford Ranger Wildtrak V6 7:00 #5 Ford Ranger Raptor 8:20 #4 Jeep Gladiator 10:13 #3 Nissan Navara PRO-4X 12:02 #2 Mercedes-Benz X-Class 13:17 #1 LDV eT60 15:27 The pattern 15:38 Mazda BT-50 leaves New Zealand 17:54 The utes that held up Sources: Trade Me (October 2026) · Auto Trader NZ · Driven · The Driven · NZ Trucking · CarExpert NZ · NZTA Motor Vehicle Register and recall records #Ute #NZCars #UsedCars #CarBuyingNZ #ResaleValue #Depreciation
