South Africa has suspended new asylum applications following violent protests in Durban and Soweto over a court ruling that broadened access to the asylum system. The Constitutional Court ruled in July that people cannot be barred from applying for asylum solely because they entered the country irregularly or failed to meet certain administrative requirements. While the judgment does not automatically grant refugee status or a right to remain in South Africa, it has reignited a heated debate over immigration, refugee protections and public safety. #dwafricasocialmedia #dwafrica
