When German engineers examined a captured American M4 Sherman, its thin armor, tall silhouette, and average 75mm gun seemed unimpressive compared with the Panther and Tiger. But beneath those apparent weaknesses was something far more dangerous: extraordinary reliability, standardized parts, fast field repairs, crew-focused design, and a logistics system capable of keeping American armored divisions moving across Europe. This is the story of why the Sherman didn’t need to be the strongest tank on the battlefield — it needed to be there, running and ready to fight, while many technically superior German machines struggled with breakdowns, maintenance, fuel, and transportation.
