Does Reading the Original Comic Change the Experience? | Coffee & Comics #7

Does reading a comic the way it originally appeared change the experience? For my upcoming Discovering DC journey through Jack Kirby’s Fourth World, I decided to try an experiment. I picked up original 1970s issues of New Gods, Mister Miracle, and The Forever People so I can read them alongside DC Finest: Fourth World – When the Old Gods Die. Same stories. Same Kirby artwork. Two very different ways of experiencing them. I want to compare the original newsprint with the bright modern pages, the colors, the feel of reading individual issues versus a collected edition, and even the role nostalgia might play. Does Kirby’s artwork look better on the paper it was originally created for? Does reading individual issues make you slow down and experience the stories differently? Or are modern collected editions simply a better way to read these classics today? I genuinely don’t know which I’ll prefer.
