The Berlin Wall evolved from a makeshift barrier into a fortified border system designed to stop East Germans from escaping to the West. Over 28 years, East German authorities added reinforced concrete, guard towers, alarmed fences, anti-vehicle obstacles, trip wires, armed patrols, and the notorious Death Strip—tightening the border after each successful escape exposed a weakness. Against this changing system, people found ways under, through, and over the Wall: a 475-foot tunnel, hidden car-trunk escapes, a glider flight, and ultralight aircraft. Their attempts reveal both the engineering of Cold War border control and the ingenuity required to defeat it.
