Every child Child Advocates of Montgomery County serves is going through a difficult time in their life, and that's where a volunteer Advocate steps in. Advocates serve across three programs: Child Welfare Advocacy for children in foster care, Justice-Involved Youth Advocacy for youth navigating the juvenile justice system, and Educational Advocacy for students struggling with school engagement or attendance. In every case, an Advocate becomes the one consistent adult who shows up for hearings, school meetings, and home visits, for as long as that child needs them. In this video, our own volunteers and staff talk about what the role looks like day-to-day, and why they keep showing up. You don't need a background in social work or law. Advocates are everyday people, just like you. Advocates complete 39+ hours of pre-service training, pass a background check, and take a sworn oath before a judge, then they're matched with a child or teen who needs exactly what they have to give: a consistent, caring presence. In 2025, 171 volunteer Advocates served across all three programs, reaching 398 children and teens. The need is bigger than our current reach, especially in Justice-Involved Youth Advocacy, where we served 60 of an estimated 191 eligible youth in Montgomery County in 2025. You don't have to wait for the perfect moment to matter to someone. There's a child in Montgomery County who needs a steady adult in their corner right now, and becoming their Advocate might be the most purposeful thing you do this year. If your season of life calls for a financial gift rather than a volunteer role, your gift has the power to help recruit and train a volunteer Advocate for a child who's waiting.
