The morning light had not yet fully unfurled when I reached the trailhead. The air carried the scent of damp earth and green things, and the shutter clicked crisp and clear — as if time itself were only just waking, alongside me.
At Buab Cave Waterfall, the roar of water drowned out footsteps and laughter alike. Droplets caught on the lens; I wiped them away again and again, pressing the shutter each time. I thought the climb ahead could only end in weariness.
When the bells of Wat Pha Lat rang out, slow and low, a sudden shower swept through. Red walls, golden spires, mist curling through the air — I watched, shifted, waited, searching for one more angle, then another.
By the time I looked up again, the light had grown long and gentle. The steps of Wat Phra That Doi Suthep glowed red in the fading dusk, and the shadows of passersby stretched thin across the stone. Standing at the summit, I paused — the camera, now full of the day's images, felt heavier than it had that morning.
From the trailhead to the waterfall, from temple to summit, I thought I had only walked between a few sights. But when I finally checked the time, a whole day had slipped away — as if a time machine had carried me from dawn to dusk in the span of a single second.
I never knew how long the road up Doi Suthep truly was. But the sunlight told me exactly how long it took to walk it.
