Step back into Birmingham's mid-90s Jungle era with DJ Ratty on Radio XL 1296 AM, recorded on 16 July 1996. This is Ratty at a crucial point in the evolution of Jungle into Drum & Bass, with deep bass, rolling breaks, atmospheric production and the darker, more technical sound that was defining the scene in 1996.
The surviving recording runs for just under an hour and features music from labels including Creative Source, Timeless, Moving Shadow, Basement and Creative Wax — a heavyweight snapshot of the 1996 Jungle and Drum & Bass sound.
🎧 WHAT TO EXPECT
Expect deep, rolling 1996 Jungle and Drum & Bass from DJ Ratty — atmospheric sounds, heavyweight basslines, intricate breaks and serious underground pressure.
The selection moves through tracks including Foul Play's "Vice", KMC's "Drifting", Top Buzz's "Living In Darkness" and Total Science's "Split Personality", giving the recording a strong picture of the futuristic, atmospheric direction Jungle was taking in the middle of the decade.
This is proper mid-90s Jungle — deep, technical and built for heads who understand the difference.
👊 WHO IT'S FOR
Jungle heads, Drum & Bass fans, DJ Ratty followers, Birmingham ravers, old-skool heads, pirate-radio listeners, DJs, vinyl collectors and anyone digging into the evolution of 1990s UK underground music.
⚠️ WHY IT'S ESSENTIAL
By 1996, the Hardcore sound of the early 90s had evolved dramatically. Jungle was becoming more sophisticated, atmospheric and bass-heavy, while the emerging Drum & Bass identity was taking shape.
DJ Ratty was an important Midlands DJ during this period, with a long association with the region's rave and Jungle scene. His career included major events such as Perception, Fantazia and Dance Planet, while his sets became closely associated with the development of the Midlands sound.
This Radio XL recording captures Ratty right in that period of transition.
It is also a fascinating example of Jungle appearing on a Birmingham commercial AM station rather than solely through dedicated pirate radio. Radio XL launched in May 1995 and broadcast across the West Midlands on 1296 AM.
