📚 James Joyce’s “Araby”: Desire, Illusion & the Pain of Growing Up | GMA Western Literature Series
What happens when the idealized world we create in our imagination collides with ordinary reality?
In James Joyce’s “Araby,” an unnamed Dublin boy transforms a youthful infatuation with Mangan’s sister into something much larger: romantic devotion, fantasy, and a quest for escape. The story belongs to Dubliners and brings together Modernism, Realism, and the social and religious atmosphere of early twentieth-century Dublin.
Mangan’s sister is never even given a name. The boy barely knows her, yet his imagination transforms her from a real girl into an idealized figure. At the same time, the bazaar called Araby becomes an imagined world of romance, exoticism, mystery, and escape.
But when he finally reaches Araby, the fantasy collapses. Instead of enchantment, he encounters darkness, closed stalls, money, and ordinary people. Joyce turns a seemingly simple trip to a bazaar into a profound psychological coming-of-age experience. James Joyce Classnotes
And then comes the Joycean epiphany. As the lights go out, the boy finally sees—not Mangan’s sister, not the magical Araby of his imagination, but himself. The physical darkness paradoxically produces psychological vision.
DESIRE → PROJECTION → IDEALIZATION → QUEST → DISILLUSIONMENT → SELF-KNOWLEDGE
The story leaves us with a question that reaches far beyond adolescence: How much of what we desire belongs to reality—and how much is created by our own imagination?
🎥 In our GMA Western Literature Series, we explore Joyce’s Dublin, Modernism, religion and romantic desire, paralysis, symbolism, light and darkness, the imagined East, and the concept of the Joycean epiphany.
