Grandfather Abdul Karim. Son Rafiqul Islam. Grandson Tanvir Ahmed. Three generations, no shared surname. So what can a Bangladeshi surname really tell you? And where did 170 million Bangladeshis actually come from?
We count down seven groups of Bangladeshi surnames: Chakma, Marma and Barua of the Chittagong hills; Mollah, Munshi and Kazi, the names of faith and law; Bhuiyan, Talukder and Chowdhury, titles of land and power from Isa Khan to the zamindars; Sheikh, Syed and Khan and the claims of Arab, Persian and Afghan ancestry; Biswas, Mondal, Sarkar and Majumder, the village names Hindus and Muslims still share; why most families had no fixed surname at all; and a #1 that explains why Bangladeshis are genetically unlike almost anyone else in South Asia.
A note on accuracy: no genetic studies link individual Bangladeshi surnames to specific DNA profiles. The patterns described come from broader studies of Bengali and eastern South Asian populations, and proportions vary between families and regions. The forest-frontier explanation for the spread of Islam in eastern Bengal is a well-known historical interpretation that historians continue to debate. Family traditions of foreign ancestors may be true for individual lines. No community, religion or caste is ranked above another. Be careful with "Arab %", "Persian %" or "Mongol %" results from hobbyist calculators; they are not peer-reviewed.
