Before the sun is fully up, mist sits in the valleys between Kampala's hills. On one hilltop a minaret catches the first light, on the next a cathedral. Kampala is the capital of a country and the heart of a kingdom, with royal tombs that are a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and home to nearly 1.8 million people, with hundreds of thousands more pouring in every morning. Our verdict comes first: Kampala is one of the most welcoming and energetic cities in Africa to live in. Then we ask how people really live in its four cities in one: a wealthy city of embassies, villas and lake views on Kololo, Nakasero and Muyenga; a middle-class city of new flats and cafés in Ntinda, Bukoto and Kyanja; a working city of single rented rooms in Kisenyi, Bwaise and Katanga; and a fourth city just over the line in Wakiso and Mukono, where families buy a plot and build their own homes, a few rooms at a time. What do they earn, what do they pay, what do they eat, and what do they do when the music starts? Where should we go next: Dar es Salaam, Kigali, or somewhere else entirely? Tell us in the comments.
