AISA National President Neha Bora, senior advocate Prashant Bhushan and activist Yogendra Yadav discuss the Election Commission of India’s (ECI) response to allegations concerning its functioning and the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.
Speaking at a press conference at the Press Club of India in Delhi, Neha Bora criticised the ECI’s affidavit filed before the Supreme Court, questioning its response to concerns about the Commission’s decision-making and accountability.
The affidavit came amid petitions challenging Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar’s functioning and raising questions about the internal decision-making process. The Indian Express had reported that Election Commissioners Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi recorded objections on 14 occasions over decisions taken by the poll panel.
In its response, the ECI maintained that the SIR orders were taken unanimously by all three members and defended the legality of the revision exercise. It also disputed allegations concerning changes to Form 6 and the Commission’s decision-making process.
On October 27, the Supreme Court granted the petitioners 10 days to respond to the affidavit, with the matter listed for further hearing on November 17.
Watch Neha Bora, Prashant Bhushan and Yogendra Yadav examine the ECI’s response and the questions surrounding electoral transparency, institutional accountability and the SIR process.
