In this powerful episode of Against the Wall, we sit down with Martin, Sylvester and Bongani, three former inmates who have taken an unexpected journey from prison to the world of acting through the South African series Umthetho.
Their breakthrough came when Mandla N. saw potential in them and decided to give them an opportunity that many former inmates rarely receive — a chance to prove themselves through acting. They took that opportunity seriously and delivered performances that opened a completely new chapter in their lives.
The three actors share their gratitude to Mandla N. for believing in them, as well as to Against the Wall for giving them exposure and a platform to tell their stories. They explain how their lives have changed since leaving prison, the opportunities they have received, and the challenges that continue to follow them even after serving their sentences.
One of the biggest issues they raise is the gap between rehabilitation inside correctional facilities and opportunities after release. They question how the system can invest in rehabilitating inmates but fail to create meaningful pathways for them once they return to society.
They also speak about another difficult reality — former inmates being invited to schools and communities to speak to young people, sometimes through political programmes, while allegedly receiving little or no payment for their work despite claims that money is allocated for these engagements.
Their stories raise serious questions about rehabilitation, reintegration, employment, exploitation and the treatment of ex-offenders in South Africa.
In this episode, they speak about:
Their journey from prison to acting.
How Mandla N. discovered their potential and gave them an opportunity.
Their roles in the South African series Umthetho.
How their lives have changed since leaving prison.
The challenges former inmates still face after rehabilitation.
Why rehabilitation should continue beyond the prison gates.
The struggle to find meaningful opportunities after release.
Former inmates being used for school and community programmes.
Concerns about being asked to speak without proper compensation.
The importance of giving ex-offenders genuine opportunities to rebuild their lives.
Their message to young people about crime and the consequences of their choices.
What needs to change in South Africa's correctional and reintegration system.
This is more than a story about three actors — it's a conversation about second chances, opportunity, rehabilitation and whether South Africa is truly prepared to welcome people back after prison.
