A Drowned Valley, a Buried School and 239 Miners Who Bought Their Pit | Living in Wales | 4K There is a country where children were once made to inform on each other for speaking their own language. Today 538,300 people still speak it, the lowest share ever recorded, and the government has written down a target of one million by 2050. Welcome to Wales: green mountains that run straight into the sea, more than 600 castles, 8.8 million sheep and lambs, and 3.1 million people with a very long memory. This film stands in three places. A reservoir in the north, where 35 of the 36 Welsh MPs voted against drowning a village and it was drowned anyway. A school in a mining village, where at a quarter past nine on an October morning in 1966 the mountain came down. And a colliery gate in the south, where 239 miners walked back in to a pit they had bought with their own redundancy money. Three places. One question. Why do people here hold on? In this film: 00:00 Intro: Why do people here hold on? 02:34 A small country that stands on end 04:34 A language older than English 06:24 1847: The Treachery of the Blue Books 08:05 The Welsh Not 10:20 The map of who speaks Welsh 12:06 Tryweryn: the valley Liverpool drowned 14:04 Cofiwch Dryweryn 15:57 Coal: the valleys fill up 18:21 Aberfan, 21 October 1966 20:09 Who was held responsible 22:06 The end of coal 23:55 Tower Colliery: the miners who bought their pit 25:49 600 castles and the Iron Ring 28:00 Snowdon becomes Yr Wyddfa 29:28 Second homes and the 150% tax 31:13 Cymraeg 2050: one million speakers 32:41 Why they hold on Which of the three places stayed with you: the valley that was drowned, the school under the tip, or the men who bought their pit back? And if the language of your own country were down to its last few counties, would you learn it? Tell me in the comments.
