The village in Vincent van Gogh’s The Starry Night wasn’t visible from his bedroom window. So how did it end up beneath one of the most recognizable skies in art?
This art history documentary explores The Starry Night through close-up details, Van Gogh’s letters, and the landscape around Saint-Paul-de-Mausole in Saint-Rémy. We investigate the morning star identified as Venus, the towering cypress, the village beneath the swirling sky, and the choices that transformed an observed landscape into something extraordinary.
The story also follows a surprisingly human disagreement. Theo questioned whether Vincent’s search for style weakened the feeling of his paintings. Vincent later expressed doubts about making his stars too large.
What did Van Gogh observe? What did he change? And why do the decisions that troubled him help make this painting so memorable?

Does the exaggerated sky make the painting feel more truthful to you—or do you understand Theo’s criticism? Tell us which detail makes you decide.
