For decades, Megalodon has been the ultimate prehistoric shark. But millions of years before Megalodon appeared, another giant predator was already hunting the oceans of the dinosaur age.
Discovered from just five fossilized vertebrae found in Australia, this mysterious shark may have reached up to 8 meters (26 feet) in length and lived around 115 million years ago. Its discovery pushed the origin of giant sharks back by roughly 15 million years and revealed that Megalodon was not the first shark to evolve into an ocean giant.
In this documentary, we explore the ancient seas of the Early Cretaceous, the evidence behind this forgotten predator, and what it tells us about the evolution of giant sharks.
Could Earth's first giant shark have been even stranger than Megalodon?
