Ancient prayer to the greatest wonder-worker of the Orthodox Church — Saint Spyridon of Trimythous. Sung by the monks of Danilov Monastery
These are not prayers meant to entertain. They come from the heart of the Orthodox Church — offered to one of her most beloved and wonder-working saints.
Saint Spyridon of Trimythous was a shepherd before he became a bishop — and he never stopped being one. Born in Cyprus towards the end of the third century, he gave all he had to his neighbors and the homeless, healed the incurably sick, and cast out demons. At the First Ecumenical Council of Nicaea, he confounded the greatest philosophers of his age — not with learning, but with simplicity and the power of God. Through his prayers, drought was replaced by abundant rains. The sick were healed. The dead were raised.
He was not a man of great words. He was a man of great faith — and through that faith, God moved.
The Akathist offered here is a prayer of praise and supplication to Saint Spyridon: a calling on his intercession, his protection, his power to stand between us and whatever threatens to overwhelm us. It has been sung by the faithful for centuries, in times of illness, of fear, of need — by those who had nowhere else to turn, and found that turning to the saints was enough.
Let this prayer rise on your behalf. Let it remind you that the saints are not distant — they are near, they are listening, and they still work wonders.
