Bhaja Govindam verse 14 reveals the hidden ego in renunciation, exposing how the mind performs spirituality while the ego remains. Read it that way and you have already stepped outside the verse, which is exactly where it cannot reach you. The verse names four disciplines: matted locks, a shaved head, hair plucked out one by one, ochre cloth. Notice that they contradict each other. One grows the hair, another removes it. So the fault was never in the hair, and never in the robe. The verse is looking past all of it, at the motive underneath. जटिलो मुण्डी लुञ्छितकेशः काषायाम्बरबहुकृतवेषः। पश्यन्नपि च न पश्यति मूढः उदरनिमित्तं बहुकृतवेषः॥ jaṭilo muṇḍī luñchitakeśaḥ kāṣāyāmbara-bahukṛtaveṣaḥ paśyann-api cha na paśyati mūḍhaḥ udara-nimittaṃ bahukṛtaveṣaḥ "Matted hair, a shaved head, hair plucked out, ochre cloth — many guises made. Though seeing, the deluded one does not see. These many guises are for the belly's sake." कर्मेन्द्रियाणि संयम्य य आस्ते मनसा स्मरन्। इन्द्रियार्थान्विमूढात्मा मिथ्याचारः स उच्यते॥ karmendriyāṇi saṃyamya ya āste manasā smaran indriyārthān vimūḍhātmā mithyāchāraḥ sa uchyate "One who restrains the organs of action but sits dwelling in the mind on sense objects, that deluded one is called a mithyāchāra, one of false conduct." (भगवद्गीता ३.६) One word carries the verse, and it appears twice. बहुकृतवेषः, many guises. The first time it only describes. The second time it returns with its reason attached: उदरनिमित्तम्, for the belly. The same word, now a verdict. But the sharper edge is पश्यन्नपि च न पश्यति. Though seeing, he does not see. He is not blind. He sees the robes, and he can explain what each one stands for. The single thing outside his vision is his own motive. He sees everyone's ego except the ego sitting inside his renunciation. The Gita says it plainly at 3.6: hold the organs of action still while the mind keeps circling the objects, and the conduct is मिथ्याचार, false. The body reached the forest. The wanting stayed in the city. And some costumes need no cloth at all. "I am spiritual." "I am not attached to anything." "I am simpler than other people." None of those requires an ochre robe. Save this for the next time you catch yourself performing calm. Send it to someone who will recognise themselves in it. — References: Bhaja Govindam (Moha Mudgara), verse 14 — भज गोविन्दम् / मोह मुद्गर Note on authorship: the verses from 13 onward carry traditional disciple attributions that differ between editions, so no individual name is claimed here Bhagavad Gita 3.6, with Shankara Bhashya (Swami Gambirananda translation) Recommended study: Vivekachudamani; Bhagavad Gita chapters 3 and 18 — Veda Vichaar — Contemplative Vedanta in Hindi Advaita Vedanta | Upanishads | Bhagavad Gita | Adi Shankaracharya 0:00 दर्पण में दिखता नया रूप 1:06 भज गोविंदम और वेश की गहराई 3:53 देखते हुए भी न देखना 6:56 अदृश्य वेश और आध्यात्मिक पहचान 10:25 वेश से परे साक्षी भाव चैनल को सहयोग दीजिए — Support Veda Vichaar यह चैनल AI उपकरणों का गहन उपयोग करता है — शोध, लेखन, स्वर, संपादन। सहयोग करें: https://buymeacoffee.com/vedavichaar This channel relies heavily on AI tools — research, writing, voice, editing — and those tools come with real recurring costs.
