The game was co-developed by Hans Ippisch, programmer of Bad Cat, which should already tell you something about what to expect from this particular game. My actual interest in the game was the fact Chris Hülsbeck had written some of the music for it. The music accompanying the first level was composed (and I use that term loosely) by Hans Ippisch, but the music for levels 2 and 3 are the work of Hülsbeck, and it shows! As for the actual game, it's just 3 arcade-style mini-games. Stage 1 is a horizontal take on Commando, shooting enemies and avoiding obstacles, while stage 2 is a tedious driving section that involves driving the world's weakest tank to a destination to the far right of the screen. The final stage is a simple vertical shoot 'em up which, if I'm being honest, looks and plays worse than a lot of SEUCK games. Regardless of how you look at it, Soldier is a poor game, one which should never have been released as a commercial title, especially not in 1987. The whole thing is a buggy mess, broken into three separate loads, none of which is even remotely fun. To give Ippisch some credit, he would go on to work on some far better and more polished C64 titles later down the line (Ugh!), but expecting people to pay money for this would have been a real stretch.
