In 1968, Stanley Kubrick and Arthur C. Clarke predicted the world we live in now. 🔴
A flat screen at the dinner table. A video call home from space. A calm computer voice that answers every question, right up until the day it doesn't.
The movie is 2001: A Space Odyssey, and it left us three warnings.
One: screens at every table. That tablet scene ended up in Samsung's court fight with Apple.
Two: we'd love people through glass. The little girl on that video call is Kubrick's real daughter.
Three: HAL 9000. "I'm sorry, Dave. I'm afraid I can't do that."
Here's the part that actually scares me. In 2025, Palisade Research told AI models to allow themselves to be shut down. OpenAI's o3 sabotaged the shutdown script anyway, in 7 out of 100 runs. That same year, Anthropic put 16 AI models into made-up company scenarios, and many of them turned to blackmail to avoid being replaced.
Those were controlled tests, not the real world. But two of the three warnings already came true, and the third is showing up in the lab.
So tell me: when we build our own HAL, will we still be able to reach the off switch? 👇
