China built a 120-meter ship elevator capable of lifting massive cargo vessels over the Three Gorges Dam — one of the most extreme pieces of engineering ever constructed. Instead of forcing ships through hours of conventional locks, this enormous machine lifts an entire water-filled chamber, cargo ship included, vertically between two different river levels.
