Adam Zavodsky - Two Images for Violin and Vibraphone, Op. 17 (2020-21)
I. Fumi-e
II. Ossuarium
Václav Pelouch, violin
Lukáš Brabec, vibraphone
Program Note: These two short movements were both inspired by a visual impression, hence the title "Images". Fumi-e was a Christian icon, usually made from metal and sometimes incased in a wooden frame. It was made and being used by Japanese inquisitors some centuries back to identify Christians (they were ordered to step on the holy picture so as to demonstrate their nonbelief in Christian God). My piece is therefore a lament with a slight hint of otherwordliness. "Ossuarium" is a latin term for a place where massive quantities of human remains are stored. One of the more bizare ones is situated in Sedlec, Czech Republic, where the bones are assembled in an artistic way. This horrifying yet breathtaking place gave birth to the second Image which I consider to be a sort of "danse macabre". (There can be heard a few alterations to the enclosed score suggested by the performers themselves.)
