In 1991 They Dug Up Butch Cassidy's Grave in Bolivia. It Was the Wrong Man.
In 1991 a television crew, two researchers and the forensic anthropologist Clyde Snow opened a grave in the cemetery of San Vicente, Bolivia, where Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid were said to have been buried after a shootout in November 1908. The bones were tested against the DNA of a relative of the Sundance Kid. They did not match. The grave belonged to a German miner, Gustav Zimmer.
The official version is the 1969 film's freeze-frame. This film follows the documents: Robert LeRoy Parker's childhood in Utah, the Telluride bank, the Wyoming prison mugshot and the governor's pardon, the Wild Bunch at Montpelier, Castle Gate, Wilcox and Tipton, the Pinkertons, the Fort Worth photograph that put their faces on wanted circulars, Etta Place and the New York studio portrait, the ranch at Cholila in Patagonia and Butch's 1902 letter home, the move to Bolivia under the names Maxwell and Brown, the Aramayo payroll robbery, the night siege at San Vicente, the burial of two men as unknown, the survival stories of Lula Parker Betenson and William Phillips, and the 1991 dig.
A note on accuracy: the 1991 result shows the wrong grave was opened. It does not show that Butch Cassidy survived, and the stories that say he came home have never produced a document. The pardon "promise" to Governor Richards is a later story, attributed as such. No image of the San Vicente dead is shown.
