God explained the strangest test in the Bible before a single soldier touched the water.
Why did God send thirty-two thousand men home and keep only three hundred, and why the ones who lapped water like dogs? This study reads Judges 7 slowly and finds a very different story from the one many of us learned in Sunday school.
In Judges 7:2, God gives His reason before the test even begins: Israel must never be able to say, "My own hand has saved me." From there we follow a spring whose name sounds like trembling, a commander who was afraid himself, and an enemy soldier's dream about a cheap loaf of barley bread. If you have ever felt too small or too scared to be useful to God, this chapter was written with you in mind.
We also look at the Hebrew word for lapping, which appears in only one other story in the Old Testament, and at the first-century historian Josephus, who told this scene in a surprising way. Then we trace two small Hebrew words, hand and save, from Gideon's first question all the way to the sentence Israel says in Judges 8:22.
Which detail surprised you most: that Gideon qualified to go home, or the word for lapping showing up with King Ahab? Tell us in the comments, and subscribe to Deeper Than Sunday for a new study every week.
