Artist Joost Krijnen speaks with researcher Joost van der Hoeven of the Van Gogh Museum about his recent series of lithographs, created during a residency at the Dutch Museum of Lithography in Valkenswaard. In this conversation, they discuss Krijnen’s broader practice, the role of drawing within his work, and how the medium of lithography expands his visual language.
Joost van der Hoeven is a researcher at the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam. He curated the exhibition Matthew Wong | Vincent van Gogh: Painting as a Last Resort (2024–2025) and is the editor and lead author of the museum’s online catalogue of works by Van Gogh’s contemporaries. His previous projects include Gauguin and Laval on Martinique (2018) and contributions to catalogues such as Van Gogh in America and Van Gogh and the Avant-Garde: Along the Seine.
Joost Krijnen (b. 1983) is a visual artist based in Amsterdam, known for his energetic drawings and paintings where rapid, spontaneous mark-making meets darker, often macabre themes. He studied at AKV|St. Joost in Breda and was a resident at the Rijksakademie van beeldende kunsten in Amsterdam. His work has been exhibited at institutions including the Stedelijk Museum Schiedam and Cokkie Snoei in Rotterdam, and is part of collections such as the Rijksmuseum Amsterdam and Schunck* Heerlen.
