The hunters come back to camp empty-handed. No meat tonight. So did everyone go to sleep hungry? Not necessarily. In this video we look at what ancient hunter-gatherers actually relied on when the hunt failed: hidden underground tubers, wild seeds ground on stone, honey eaten on the trail, small game, shellfish from the shore, and the most important backup of all: other people. We'll look at real archaeological evidence: 🦴 Madjedbebe, Northern Australia: plant foods from about 65,000–53,000 years ago 🌾 Ohalo II, Israel: a grinding stone used to process wild grains long before farming 🍞 Shubayqa 1, Jordan: charred bread-like remains from about 14,400 years ago 🐚 Pinnacle Point, South Africa: shellfish use about 164,000 years ago 🍯 Research on the Hadza of Tanzania: fallback foods and eating while foraging There was no single "prehistoric menu." Diet depended on place, season, skill and knowledge, and on a community that shared. ⏱️ CHAPTERS 0:00 The Hunt Failed 1:00 There Was No Single Prehistoric Menu 1:57 The Forgotten Gatherer: Hidden Tubers 2:33 Fallback Foods (Hadza Research) 3:00 Knowing What's Safe to Eat 3:31 65,000-Year-Old Plant Foods in Australia 3:56 Fruits, Nuts & Tiny Seeds 4:34 Ohalo II: Grinding Grain Before Farming 5:04 Shubayqa 1: Bread Before Farming 5:47 Did the Hunter Really Go Hungry? 7:02 Small Game, Birds & Eggs 7:20 Shellfish at Pinnacle Point 8:02 The Real Backup: Sharing Food 9:09 When Every Option Fails 10:11 Back to the Camp 💬 If you lived in that world, what would you learn first: hunting, or knowing which plants to eat?
