Look at the four inches closest to your scalp, then look at your ends. If they don't match, this one's for you. I'm Donna Petrocelli, and I stood behind a color chair on Wyoming Avenue in Scranton for thirty-five years, mixing color every Tuesday from seven in the morning until the last head was dry. These are the 7 hair color mistakes I watched women over 60 make over and over, at home with a box or in a chair where nobody corrected them, plus the fix I'd actually use at my own mirror for each one. Going all-over dark, one flat tube with no dimension, shopping by the picture on the carton, letting the regrowth line run, recoloring instead of glossing, hot water, and guessing at the timer. Patch test a full day ahead, every time, even a shade you've used for years. If you want the whole thirty-five years written down, Skip the Salon is here: https://donnapetrocelli.com/book
In this video:
✓ Going all-over dark in one shot -- it drains an older complexion instead of softening it; keep some lift near the face rather than one flat dark tone
✓ One flat, single-tube box-dye shade with no dimension -- it reads artificial under any light; use two adjacent box shades (a base plus a touch lighter at the crown and part) instead of one flat tube
✓ Picking a box-dye shade off the model on the front of the box instead of her own current level and undertone -- do a strand test on a hidden piece first, matched to the hair she actually has now, not the photo
✓ Letting the regrowth line show too long between colors -- covered in her book's root-touch-up chapter: a powder matched to her exact tone, applied along the part before drying, blown dry away from the part to blend it, under $25
✓ Fighting brassiness with another full re-color instead of a toning step -- covered in her book's faded-color chapter: a weekly gloss treatment instead of stripping and redoing the whole head, under $25
✓ Washing color-treated hair in hot water -- it opens the cuticle and fades color fast; a cool-water rinse seals it back down, from the same faded-color chapter
✓ Leaving box-dye developer on past what the box states because longer feels like it should mean darker or more even -- it doesn't; it just raises the burn risk, and the box's stated time is already correct
✓ Where it won't work: this is at-home maintenance color only -- not a substitute for foils, balayage, color correction, or fixing hair that's already damaged or breaking. If the scalp is already irritated, cut, or broken anywhere near where color would go, skip it and let it heal first. If a reaction happens -- swelling, real burning, anything that doesn't stop -- rinse immediately and that's a doctor's visit, not a home fix.
Cheap first. Then expensive, if you still need it.
Before you try anything I show you, patch test new products a day ahead, keep chemicals and tint off the eyelid and away from broken skin, and if anything stings, swells or won't heal, that's a doctor's job, not mine.
