What was life like at every rank of the German Army during World War II? In this video, you’ll go through all 21 major ranks of the German Heer, starting as a Schütze and working your way through the enlisted ranks, NCOs, officers and generals until reaching Generalfeldmarschall. You’ll see how your daily life, responsibilities and authority changed at each rank, from carrying your own rifle and following orders to commanding thousands of soldiers across huge parts of the battlefield. The video also explains how the German Army rank system worked, what different ranks actually did and how military command changed as you moved higher up the hierarchy. This is not meant to suggest that one real soldier would have realistically climbed through every rank during World War II. Each rank is shown as a separate example of what your life could have looked like at that level.
