🌾 JOHN DEERE ISN'T SELLING YOU A TRACTOR ANYMORE. IT'S SELLING A SUBSCRIPTION In January 2022, John Deere rolled an autonomous 8R onto the stage at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. Four years later, that future is actually for sale, and up close it looks like this. The autonomy kit does exactly one job: tillage. The hardware runs around $40,000, and the subscription that lets you use it runs roughly $10,000 a year. And that is one line on the tab. Guidance signal is separate. Connectivity is separate. There is a per-acre fee. And $195 a year, per machine, just to get the tools to diagnose a tractor you already paid a half million dollars for. 💵 What the tab is made of • About $1,500 a year for the RTK signal that repeats your passes season after season • About $800 per receiver for JDLink connectivity, so data leaves the machine for the dealer • About $1 per acre on fallow ground and about $5 per acre in crop for premium See & Spray • Around $10,000 a year for "autonomy as a service" • $195 a year per machine for a farmer, and $5,995 a year for an independent shop, for service software 🗂️ What we break down • The $305 million Blue River Technology deal and the birth of Deere's software business • Operations Center: more than a million connected machines and roughly 500 million engaged acres • The company's target: about 10% of revenue recurring by 2030 • Why hardware is already bolted to the machine but stays switched off until you pay • See & Spray: what it actually saves and why the meter runs in the cab • Purdue's analysis: does autonomy pay on commercial grain farms at today's prices? • Right to repair: the $99 million settlement and the ten-year FTC order • Why farmers are bidding up pre-emissions tractors from the 70s and 80s at auction • What CNH, AGCO and Kubota are doing, and whether any option comes without a renewal date • Dealer consolidation and four things worth watching next 🎚️ How this episode was made This is not a rewrite of press releases. We pulled numbers from company filings and public statements, court documents, university research and trade press, worked through the cost of ownership, and wrote the script so complicated economics stay easy to follow. Then came narration and a long edit: footage of machinery and fields, figures and diagrams on screen, graphics, music and color. Every scene was built by hand, and this is one of the most labor-intensive videos on the channel. 📌 Disclaimer: nature and purpose of this video This video is informational, analytical and educational in nature. Its purpose is to explain how subscription economics work in farm equipment and help viewers ask the right questions before they sign. • All figures come from public sources: John Deere filings and public statements, the class action settlement and FTC order, university research, trade publications and dealer pricing. Prices are approximate, vary by region and change, so confirm current terms with your dealer. • This is not financial, investment or legal advice, and not a recommendation to buy or sell any stock or equipment. • Assessments and conclusions are the author's opinion. The company settled without admitting wrongdoing and has publicly called the agreement good news for customers. This video does not accuse any individual and does not claim any law was broken. • This video contains no instructions for bypassing or defeating software locks on equipment and does not encourage doing so. • John Deere, CNH, Case IH, New Holland, AGCO, Kubota and other names are mentioned for identification only. The channel is not affiliated with these companies; this video is not sponsored and is not an advertisement. • Some visuals are illustrative and may show similar machines and fields. • The video contains no political campaigning and does not promote hatred or discrimination. Tell us in the comments and we will check it and add a correction to the pinned comment. 🗨️ Your call If you were signing tomorrow, would you buy the machine with everything turned on and a fee every season, buy the simplest new machine you can find and skip the features, or keep the old iron running until it will not turn over? And if you already pay these subscriptions, tell us what they cost you last year and whether they earned it. 🎙️ About the channel We follow the money behind the machines: real numbers, real math and no dealer spin.
