Nature investigation | A connected reef community
Coral polyps are animals that capture food. Many shallow reef builders also host microscopic algae that photosynthesize and share nutrients. Suitable warmth and sunlight matter to many shallow reefs, but other corals live in cold, dark deep water.
Clownfish shelter in compatible host anemones, which are distinct animals; our anemone is attached to rock, not living coral. Gobiodon histrio can remove and eat particular seaweeds harming its coral host; not all gobies do this. Grazing fish and urchins also influence reef food relationships.
Ask: who provides shelter, and who gains food? Internal symbiotic algae differ from external harmful seaweeds. Feeding and microscopic details are enlarged, simplified models.
AI singing: Hitsune Kumi (Cubialpha) / DiffSinger, UFR model. Original lyrics, score, paper characters and animation: BuddleBeat.
