Kelly Dzioba, therapist in Saint Petersburg, Florida investigates what new motherhood in the UK looks like.
What can we learn from the UK about supporting mothers’ mental health?
In the first episode of The Motherhood Project, I sit down with Dr. Bhairavi Sapre, an NHS Consultant Psychiatrist specializing in perinatal mental health, to talk about how the UK supports women during pregnancy and postpartum, and what maternal mental health care can look like when mothers receive specialized support.
We talk about Mother and Baby Units (MBUs), perinatal psychiatric care, building confidence in new mothers, barriers to accessing care, and the ways the UK system approaches serious mental health concerns while keeping mothers and babies together whenever possible.
As a perinatal mental health therapist in the U.S., I created The Motherhood Project to look beyond our own system and ask: What are other countries and cultures doing differently for mothers — and what can we learn from them?
