Tanjung Aru Station, Kota Kinabalu, to Tenom by train, with a stop at Beaufort, then a car on to Melalap. Two train legs through the interior of Malaysian Borneo, RM7.55 for an adult. That’s roughly US$1.90. The Beaufort to Tenom line has been operating since 1905, and not much has changed. No online booking, no card payments, cash only at the counter. This is how locals still travel through the interior of Borneo.    / @looseinasia   What you need to know before you go: Tickets are counter purchase only. No online booking exists. You can only buy a ticket for the next immediate departure when the counter opens, so arrive at least 30–45 minutes before your train. Return tickets must be purchased at the opposite station. Bring Ringgit. Digital payments are generally not accepted at these rural counters. Fares (one-way, as of May 2026): Tanjung Aru to Beaufort: Adult RM4.80 / Child RM2.40. Departs roughly 07:30 AM and 05:40 PM. Beaufort to Tenom: Adult RM2.75 / Child RM1.40. Departs roughly 07:50 AM and 01:30 PM. Times can shift, so arrive early. Tenom to Melalap by car: RM120 (roughly US$30) for the whole car, not per person. The hire covered Tenom to Melalap and the drive back to Kota Kinabalu.
